I just got word from the vet that everything went off without a hitch and that Bailey is resting comfortably. Bailey underwent surgery this morning to remove the tumor (most likely a locally invasive myxosarcoma) on his rear hind leg. They took the leg off mid-femur, 2 joints above the location of the tumor. Several vets had suggested removing the leg at the hip, but this particular surgeon said it would be better to go mid-femur because there would be less of a chance for nerve damage as well as more “meat” to surround and cushion the femur bone.
The vet would prefer to keep him overnight on IV fluids, although we have hesitations because he will be unattended from 9pm until 6am. The vet said it is very unlikely that anything would happen and that it would be much better for Bailey to receive the fluids, however he understands if we are uncomfortable and want to bring him home. He also mentioned that Bailey will be feelingthe effects of the sedatives and fentanyl patch and will likely be knocked out until tomorrow morning anyhow. At this point I believe we will let him stay at the vet overnight – I believe the fluids are more important and trust that everything will work out fine. We are looking forward to picking him up at 8am tomorrow.
stay strong bailey!
Good luck with him, Chris! Hugs to Bailey!
Good news!
My pug Maggie had her left rear leg removed. The left a bit of the femur and wrapped the muscle around it. The surgeon told me that it was a less traumatic surgery than trying to ‘dis-articulate’ the joint at the hip.

Let the healing begin!!! xoox
Let the healing begin!! oxox
I’m so happy to hear that Bailey is doing well. Take care of yourself and have trust that your sweet Bailey is going to have a speedy recovery. Rudy has surgery this past Wednesday and both of us have been getting stronger each day.
Rudy wants to tell Bailey that he may feel a little strange with all the meds and stuff but he’ll be feeling better in no time!
something I forgot to add…my Rudy is 11 yrs (wise) and he’s a big boy 94lbs. We thought he had arthritis for quite sometime and before he was diagnosed with cancer stopped using his rear affected leg. Now five days after surgery he’s been able to balance and hop around! His rear leg is a little wobbly and gets tired at times but he’s further along than I expected. I think Bailey will surprise you too!
Welcome, and thank you for sharing Bailey’s story! We’re looking forward to his homecoming. Please keep us posted.
I’m sure Bailey will be glad to be home with you again tomorrow! He will probably be getting around before you know. Linnea just had her rear leg removed 12 days ago and doesn’t know why we want her to take it easy. Good luck with all the recovery!
I can’t wait to get him home!!!!!!
